What Goes In a Matcha Coffee Latte
To make this iced matcha latte recipe you will need a few simple ingredients. Keep in mind that when it comes to matcha powder a good quality matcha powder is essential. Ceremonial grade matcha is recommended for best results. For a smooth earthy matcha, you can remove sugar completely, or sweeten it with a natural sweetener instead of white sugar. You can use maple syrup, honey syrup, or simple syrup. These are the ingredients you will need:
- 1/2 tsp matcha tea powder
- 2 oz warm water
- 4-8 oz milk of choice
- 1 shot of espresso
- 1 tsp honey simple syrup
- ice cubes
You will also need a milk frother or matcha whisk.
How to Make a Matcha Espresso Fusion
The most important part of making matcha drinks is the matcha. If you are new to using matcha powder, it is essentially a green tea powder made from green tea leaves The leaves are stone ground into a super fine powder.
First, combine the matcha and warm water in a small glass and froth using a handheld frother or a bamboo whisk. If you are using a sweetener, you will add it here and combine the sweetener with the matcha and water. We are using honey simple syrup because it’s a more natural sweetener.
Make sure to use warm water and not hot water, as hot water can make the matcha taste more bitter. Froth until the powder is completely dissolved and set aside.
Next, pour a shot of espresso into a tall glass. You don’t need an espresso machine, you can make quick and easy espresso with the Aeropress. This is our Aeropress espresso recipe.
Since this is an iced version of a matcha latte, add ice to the glass and fill the ice up just above the espresso. If you have coffee ice cubes those would be perfect. (It’s ok if you have regular ice cubes).
Then slowly, and carefully pour the milk into the glass. To get the layered look like the local coffee shop often does, pour the milk over the back of a spoon so that it doesn’t pour into the glass in a straight stream. If this is your first time and the layers don’t work out very well, it’s okay. Creating these layers is not easy, and we struggle with it ourselves.
Lastly, add a few more ice cubes and then the matcha mixture to the glass.
The vibrant green color should stay separate from the other layers of this dirty matcha latte.
Pop in a straw and enjoy your matcha espresso latte. Give it a stir before drinking and mix all of the flavors together for the full matcha coffee experience.
Dirty Matcha Latte
This green tea latte is a delicious drink and it contains more caffeine than regular green tea. Combine that with the addition of espresso to make it the ultimate great afternoon pick-me-up.
