What is Agua Fresca?

Simply put, agua frescas are non-alcoholic drinks made with a mixture of fresh fruit, preferably sweet fruit, with a little sugar, and water. These simple ingredients can easily be found in your grocery store and made in a high-speed blender. These non-alcoholic beverages are popular in Central America, and are especially popular within the Mexican culture. Today we are making a watermelon version of an agua fresca.

Directions for Watermelon Agua Fresca Recipe

  1. Place the juicy watermelon, sugar, and cold water into a high speed blender and blend for approximately one minute. The Vitamin is my favorite blender, you can find it online here.
  2. Next, use a large spoon to lightly skim the top of the liquid in the blender to remove any foam. You can also use a fine mesh strainer to remove the foam from your watermelon juice.
  3. Pour into a glass pitcher and serve right away over ice cubes with a simple lime wedge and/or mint leaves.

Tips When Making Homemade Agua Frescas

  • You can use sugar substitutes, like simple syrup or agave nectar for this recipe. Depending on the substitute you choose you may need to adjust the measurement according to taste. Don’t swap them out equally, you’ll want to test out your substitute and find the right amount to suit your preferences.
  • Some foam, after blending, is okay, but you don’t want too much. It isn’t visually appealing and it’s a bit unnecessary on your fruit drink.  I remove the odd-looking foam for a prettier presentation. It’s not much, but it’s worth the extra few seconds that it takes to do.
  • For the best flavor, you will need the best watermelon. Make sure to use seedless watermelon. You do not want seeds to mess up your perfect summer drink.
  • If you want a stronger flavor, add some more watermelon to your water, without changing the other ingredient amounts. Just know, it will get a little thicker when adding extra fruit.
  • One thing to keep in mind when it comes to this delicious drink is that like many things it tastes great right after it’s made and is at its freshest. It will start to get a little weird if left to sit in the fridge. If you make a large batch and don’t intend to drink it all right away then you can use your watermelon agua fresca to make homemade juice bars with simple popsicle molds to enjoy on a hot summer day.
