What Makes the Aeropress Coffee Maker Amazing

What makes the Aeropress better than your typical coffee brewing machine?

  • It’s no secret that the Aeropress makes a great cup of coffee, but there’s so much more.
  • Portable: the Aeropress is small and convenient for travel. Toss it in your travel bag and make great coffee on vacation or a business trip. No more searching for a popular coffee spot when you can make your own.
  • Fast Coffee: You are able to make your own homemade latte in less time than it would take you to wait in line and place an order.
  • Flexible: Whether you are making traditional hot coffee, espresso coffee, or specialty coffee you are able to have a lot of flexibility. You can adjust the grind size, water temperature, and brew strength.
  • Easy Clean up: Clean up is a breeze!

The Best Grind Size for Aeropress

First, start with your favorite coffee. You will get the best results if you grind our own coffee beans for fresh full-flavored coffee. The best coffee beans for this simple recipe are good quality medium roast to dark roast coffee and a medium-fine grind. These will produce the flavor of a truly delicious latte. The type of coffee beans you choose is really a personal preference. If you don’t have a grinder you can absolutely use pre-ground coffee.

One thing to keep in mind is that a finer grind size will work better than a coarse grind. Typical preground store-bought coffee is medium ground because it is made for a standard drip coffee maker. Grinding your own beans allows you to get a bit more finer with your coffee grind. When grinding your own beans to make homemade lattes with Aeropress set your grinder to the finest setting. And when buying pre-ground try to find a fine grind or espresso grind if you can. This recipe is using Charleston Organic whole coffee beans and the Hamilton Beach coffee grinder.

Follow these step-by-step instructions for the best way to make a really tasty latte coffee. It is just as good as those made with fancy coffee makers but without all the extra fuss.

Coffee Strength

Now, decide if you prefer a strong coffee flavor or not. We find that one heaping Aeropress scoop of coffee offers a weaker cup of coffee, whereas three Aeropress scoops are very strong. You may have to play around with different coffee ratios to find the best ratio for you. Adjust water temps, grind sizes, and brew times to find your favorite. For the sake of this easy Aeropress latte recipe, we are using 2 scoops, which equates to approximately 28 grams of coffee.

Simple Latte Ingredients

Gather your simple latte ingredients. This is all you will need:

  • 2 scoops, or 28g of coffee of choice
  • 3/4 cup to 1 cup whole milk
  • water

You will also need the Aeropress and a milk frother to make your delicious latte.

Setting up the Aeropress for the Brew Process

First, rinse the paper Aeropress filter with water. This will rinse away impurities and eliminate any paper taste. Next, insert the paper filter into the filter cap and secure it to the bottom of the Aeropress chamber.

Next, heat up your water to 185 degrees. Place the whole assembly on top of your cup. Make sure the Aeropress fits nicely on top of a coffee mug or cup of choice.

While your water is heating add your desired amount of coffee grinds to the Aeropress chamber, for the sake of this recipe we are using two scoops, which equates to approximately 28 grams of coffee. Give the Aeropress chamber a gentle shake to level out the coffee grinds.

The Brewing Process for Aeropress Latte

Slowly add freshly boiled, filtered, hot water (185 degrees F) until it reaches between the “2” and “3” stamped on the side of the chamber. Filtered water will make sure to remove any odd flavors that may be in your tap water.

Most of the water should remain in the chamber. A small amount of drip through is normal, but if it seems excessive then you may need a finer grind.

Use the stir stick to gently stir the coffee and water. Do this for at least 30 seconds to make sure that all of the grinds are fully immersed.

The coffee should look very dark while steeping in the chamber.

Place the plunger into the top of the chamber and allow the coffee to steep for at least 60 seconds. A longer coffee steep time will result in a stronger coffee flavor.

Heating Milk for Your Latte

For the frothing process place 3/4 cup to one cup of milk into a small saucepan or a frothing pitcher and heat on the stove. Heat over medium heat to 185 degrees F. You want hot milk but do not let it boil.

Next, use a frothing wand to froth your warm milk. You can find the one pictured online here: frothing wand. If you own a fancy milk steamer then of course that works just as well.

Finish the Coffee Brew

Next, apply gentle pressure and depress the Aeropress plunger pushing the water through the chamber and into your cup or mug.

As you reach the bottom of the chamber you will hear a slight hiss as the remaining coffee pushes through and into your coffee cup. You will also notice a bit of foam under the filter cap as soon as you finish. Both are completely normal.
