The Best Grind Size for Aeropress
First, start with your favorite coffee. You will get the best results if you grind our own beans for fresh full-flavored coffee. The best coffee beans for this simple recipe are good quality medium roast to dark roast coffee. These will produce the flavor of a truly delicious mocha latte. The type of coffee beans you choose is really a personal preference. If you don’t have a grinder you can absolutely use pre-ground coffee.
One thing to keep in mind is that a finer grind size will work better than a coarse grind, so the best coffee grind size for great mocha coffee is medium to fine. Typical preground store-bought coffee is medium ground because it is made for a standard drip coffee maker. Grinding your own beans allows you to get a bit more finer with your coffee grind. When grinding your own beans to make homemade lattes with Aeropress set your grinder to the finest setting. This recipe is using Charleston Organic whole coffee beans and the Hamilton Beach coffee grinder.
Follow these step-by-step instructions for the best way to make a really good mocha latte coffee. It is just as good as one made with a fancy espresso machine but without all the extra fuss.
Now, decide if you prefer a strong coffee flavor or not. We find that one heaping Aeropress scoop of coffee offers a weaker cup of coffee, whereas three Aeropress scoops are very strong. You may have to play around with different coffee ratios to find the best ratio for you. Adjust water temps, grind sizes, and brew times to find your favorite. For the sake of this easy mocha latte, we are using 2 scoops, which equates to approximately 28 grams of coffee.
Mocha Latte Ingredients
Gather your simple mocha latte ingredients. This is all you will need:
- 2 scoops, or 28g of coffee of choice
- 2 Tbsp cocoa powder
- 3/4 cup whole milk
Setting up the Aeropress for Espresso Style Coffee
First, rinse the paper Aeropress filter with water. This will rinse away impurities and eliminate any paper taste. Next, insert the paper filter into the filter cap and secure it to the bottom of the Aeropress chamber.
Next, heat up your water to 185 degrees. Place the whole assembly on top of your cup. Make sure the Aeropress fits nicely on top of a coffee mug or cup of choice.
While your water is heating add your desired amount of coffee grinds to the Aeropress chamber, for the sake of this espresso recipe we are using two scoops, which equates to approximately 28 grams of coffee.
Give the Aeropress chamber a gentle shake to level out the coffee grinds.
Then slowly add freshly boiled, filtered, hot water (185 degrees F) until it reaches between the “2” and “3” stamped on the side of the chamber. Filtered water will make sure to remove any odd flavors that may be in your tap water.
Most of the water should remain in the chamber. A small amount of drip through is normal, but if it seems excessive then you may need a finer grind.
Use the stir stick to gently stir the coffee and water. Do this for at least 30 seconds to make sure that all of the grinds are fully immersed.
Place the plunger into the top of the chamber and allow the coffee to steep while you prepare the milk.
Making the Chocolate Flavor for Your Mocha
Place 3/4 cup to one cup milk into a small saucepan or a milk frothing pitcher and heat the milk over medium heat to 185 degrees F. You want hot milk but not boiling milk.
When you reach the desired temperature remove the milk from the heat and get the cocoa powder.
Add the cocoa powder to the milk.
Use a milk frothing wand to froth the milk.
Finish the Coffee Brew
Next, apply gentle pressure and depress the Aeropress plunger pushing the water through the chamber.
Remove the Aeropress and admire your strong hot coffee.
Final Steps to Making a Mocha Latte
Leave your prepared coffee in the cup and grab the frothed milk.
Gently pour the frothed milk into your coffee cup.
Add as much or as little foam to the top of your mocha as you would like.

Mocha Latte Recipe Alternatives
Besides the fact that this delicious latte absolutely has fewer calories than the standard Starbucks version, it also allows you the ability to change things up and make adjustments to your own liking. Here are a few alternative things you can swap out in this mocha latte recipe:
- Prefer a non dairy milk? whole milk can be swapped out for soy milk, oat milk, coconut milk, or unsweetened almond milk.
- Not a fan of cocoa powder? You can swap that out for hot chocolate mix, chocolate sauce, melted chocolate, or homemade chocolate syrup. If you are looking for a low sugar option you can also swap out the cocoa powder for cacao powder.
- Want your latte even sweeter? add simple syrup, maple syrup, or mocha syrup.
- Feeling Fancy? Top your mocha latte with whipped cream, and chocolate shavings and drizzle with chocolate syrup.
